Archer Avenue Photographic Survey: McDermott Street

A survey-in-progress of Archer Avenue, Chicago, Illinois

This photographic survey was begun in Fall 2010 to document the streetscape of the portion of Archer Avenue roughly bounded by the South Branch of the Chicago River on the west and the crossover of the Stevenson Expressway on the east.

Unlike most historic resource surveys, this documentation does not include data forms or written description and it does not exclude vacant lots or modern construction. It is intended simply to show the street as it appears now and to give some sense of its past condition. Although the site will be supplemented over time with more historic material and documentation of more buildings, it will never stand alone as a planning tool. It should be appreciated only as an archival repository for views of the street.

All photographs are by the author.

Historic plans are from the 1911 edition of the Sanborn Fire Insurance Company maps. The Archer facades of the plans are generally to the right.

Black and white photographs are from the Illinois Historic Structures Survey, via HAARGIS, unless otherwise noted.
